Why Crafting with Kids is Always Worth the Mess

Have you ever glanced around after a crafting session and wondered, “Was this worth the mess?” The answer is yes! (Most of the time—except glitter projects). Crafting is more than just something for the kids to do when its raining; it’s about learning, creativity, and building memories. Here are some easy ways to embrace crafting in a way that keeps both you and the kids happy (with minimal cleanup)!

1. Make the Mess Part of the Fun

If you have the space, turn a corner of your home into a “craft zone.” Whether it’s the kitchen table with some newspaper or a nook in the kids' room, having a designated space makes cleanup easier and gives kids a special spot to unleash their creativity. No extra space? No problem! Set up a small craft tub in a corner with all the essentials for easy access and quick cleanup. Having a dedicated “zone” means the creativity stays contained (mostly).

2. Embrace Open-Ended Crafting

The best way to make crafting more enjoyable for both you and your kids is to ditch the rigid “do it this way” projects. Instead, go for open-ended creations. Let them paint rocks, make collages, or simply mix colors together—no rules, no pressure. The paint might end up a brown-purple muck, but they’ll have a blast experimenting. And the less you worry about “keeping colors separated,” the more relaxed you’ll feel too (trust me on this one!).

3. Keep a Stash of Recycled Supplies

You don’t need fancy supplies for creativity. Collect cardboard boxes, tubes, egg cartons, and applesauce lids, and stash them in a tote or box. When your kids are in the mood for crafting, they can grab the bag of recycled goodies and dive right in! Not only are you saving money, but you’re also teaching them that creativity can come from everyday materials.

Remember: The mess might be inevitable, but the joy and learning kids get from crafting are priceless. Embrace it, and you’ll be surprised by the memories you create along the way.
